The Story

Robin (Angela DiMarco) has been planning the perfect moment for ages… and putting it off because she wants it to be just exactly right.  But a discovery made by Jenna (Carollani Sandberg) brings things to the fore, and Robin comes to realize that “just exactly right” doesn’t need flash mobs or a script… only love.

The Highball

What Kind Of Cheese Is It?

Perfect beyond the limits of craft.

Pairs Well With...

The one that transcends the moment to become part of it.

“How about you dance with me now?”

The perfect moment.

It’s the one you planned for days, months, years; the one you played over and over inside your head ten, a hundred, a thousand times.  It’s the moment to which your whole life has been leading; the one you can’t wait for but that you none the less hold off on because you know it needs to be wonderful and fantastic and oh damn you just can’t afford to screw this up so everything everything everything has to be just… exactly… right…

And then the plans get tossed aside because the moment just happens, and it’s the just happening that makes it perfect…  Because we all know that perfection can’t be scripted.

Can it?

There is a script that serves as the frame for Together Forever.  It is wonderful and fantastic and everything all of us wish we could think to say when the moment sneaks up on us.  Kris and Lindy Boustedt deserve an ovation for it.

It is, as the saying goes, an auspicious start.  The Boustedts then keep the good stuff going with truly outstanding direction that never gets in the way of either the story or the actors bringing it to life.

But the perfection… the true perfection…

Carollani Sandberg is its herald.  During the first two minutes of Together Forever, she takes the audience on a tour of All The Feelings without uttering a single word.  Tired, whimsical, amused, shocked, happy… indescribably happy.  Sandberg has an extraordinary gift of expressiveness through facial and body language, and she shares it here with all her heart.  Indeed, there’s so much heart to her performance that it’s very easy to forget that she’s acting, and that is the highest mark of art and craft that any actor can achieve.  In those first two minutes (and beyond), what Sandberg does is so incredibly real… and then… and then…

Enter Angela DiMarco, who brings her own brand of incredible.  Her style here is far different from Sandberg’s (in keeping with the character she’s playing), but it is no less heartfelt and no less real.  Whereas Sandberg’s Jenna wears her heart on her sleeve, DiMarco’s Robin holds hers in tight reserve; through the most subtle of small cues, DiMarco makes it clear that what the audience is seeing is something special that this woman would only allow to appear in intimate company, but she does it without making the character seem selfish or standoffish in any way.  Baring the heart of an introverted character in a natural fashion is no easy task, and yet that’s exactly what Angela DiMarco does.  And then… and then…

By themselves, Carollani Sandberg and Angela DiMarco are stellar.  Under the outstanding direction of Kris and Lindy Boustedt, they both shine even brighter.

But when their eyes meet, when they touch, when they dance…  Together, Carollani Sandberg and Angela DiMarco are perfect.  Their moment is perfect.  If your eyes don’t well up at least somewhat during the last few minutes of Together Forever, check your pulse.  Lots of movies talk about love, but Together Forever truly shows it, gets it, is it.  No flash mobs, no train stations in the rain, no breathless races across an airline terminal.  Just something real.  Wonderfully, fantastically real.

And yes, if you haven’t noticed already, Robin and Jenna are both women.  There is exactly one – very important – line of dialogue that addresses the elephant in the room: the fact that same sex marriage only became legal recently.  (Though earlier in their enlightened home state than it did for people in some other parts of America.)  That one line is a masterstroke, deftly acknowledging a social and political sea change that only came about after years and decades of hard fought struggle, but without allowing the enormity of that to overshadow the pure beauty of the moment happening on the screen.  Yes, Together Forever is about marriage equality, but more than that, more than anything, it is about the beauty and magic of love.

And it is perfect.  And it is perfection that you need to experience for yourself.
